STAGED READINGS 2023
Quartet
Written by Ronald Harwood
Directed by Mary Ellen Fawk
SYNOPSIS: Quartet by Ronald Harwood is a charming comedy about aging musicians, especially opera singers, who are trying to make the most of what aging can do. The setting is a retirement home for musicians. Four elderly former opera-singers, who had worked together in the past, are sitting out in a study area, Reginald is quietly reading a serious book, but jovial, inappropriate and priapic Wilfred is chuckling about sex, as he regards Cissy, lying back and listening to music through her headphones. Steadfast Anne is vocalizing and attempting to perfect Caro Nome.
They are about to be joined by newcomer Jean, who was a major star in her day and to whom Reginald was once unhappily married.
Is there any chance that these four will ever sing together again? A gala concert is about to take place at the retirement home to celebrate Verdi's birthday. Three of the friends are keen to recreate the third act quartet "Bella figlia dell'amore" from Rigoletto and one is not. But the play eventually moves to an uncertain conclusion when they don costumes and lip-synch to their own retro recordings.

PLAY READING SERIES
Since 2011, The Drama Group has offered script-in-hand readings of a variety of plays, expanding the scope of our offerings to Patrons, Subscribers and Members alike. Offered free-of-charge as true community out-reach, the series has brought to the stage titles we haven't been able to fit into our subscription season. The wide variety of plays featured have come from World Literature, popular American Drama, New Plays under development and Classics of Readers Theatre. Building these evenings on a shoestring with minimal rehearsal and production value allows us to focus in on the story.
We're always encouraging new participants and fresh ideas for this program. If you have interest in directing or participating as an actor, please contact the Reading Series Curator, MaryEllen Fawk.
